Gansey Knitting Workshop: Design & Knit Your Own Mini Gansey

Join us for a three hour immersive workshop where you’ll explore the history, construction, and design of traditional Ganseys. This hands-on session will guide you through the key techniques needed to create your own mini Gansey, equipping you with the skills and pattern to knit a full-size, custom Gansey.

What You’ll Learn

• The cultural significance of Ganseys and their distinctive design elements

• Traditional construction techniques, including seamless knitting in the round, gussets, and shoulder shaping

• A range of classic Gansey stitch motifs and their meanings

• How to design your own motifs, chart patterns, and incorporate them into your knitting

• Practical skills such as working at a firm gauge, reading charts, and shaping techniques

By the end of the workshop, you’ll finish or be on your way to finishing your mini Gansey, giving you a stepping stone as well as all the skills towards knitting a full-sized, personalised version.

Materials Provided

• Yarn

• Printed workshop materials, including pattern for your mini gansey and custom full size gansey.

• Knitting tools (though you’re welcome to bring your own needles. 3.5mm cable needles or DPN's)

• Tea, coffee, and cake to keep you fuelled while you knit

Who is this for?

This workshop is suitable for knitters who are:

✔ Confident knitting in the round (using either magic loop or DPNs)

✔ Comfortable with knit and purl stitches

✔ Some experience with basic shaping (increases and decreases)
